How to serve, by age

6 mo+

Cook whole scallion stalks and ginger slices in the pot, then fish them out — aroma without debris. Minced garlic and chopped mild herbs go in cooked through.

1 yr+

Follow family seasoning. Hot irritants — raw garlic by the fistful, chili, Sichuan peppercorn — still go slowly.

Choking risk: Low

Fish out whole scallion knots and large ginger slices; fine minced aromatics cooked soft are not a concern.

If choking ever happens: act immediately — call emergency services (911 in the US) and seek emergency care. Do not wait.
