A staple of northern Chinese tables. Dry, firm chunks of mantou can gag — early on, tear it small and soak it soft, or steam it back to fluffiness.

Your food log

How to serve, by age

8–10 mo

Tear into fingernail-size pieces and soften with warm water, milk or broth before serving.

10–12 mo

Small torn pieces straight from a same-day soft steamed bun, for gripping practice.

12 mo+

Small soft pieces your toddler holds and eats alone.

Choking risk: Moderate

Cold mantou and its tougher skin resist chewing, and dry crumbs scatter into coughs. Serve the soft, fluffy part only — no dry, hard chunks.

If choking ever happens: act immediately — call emergency services (911 in the US) and seek emergency care. Do not wait.

Allergens

Mantou is wheat flour, a common allergen (gluten). First servings small and observed.

Common questions

Is mantou a "trigger food" to avoid?
Feeding guidance carries no such concern — soft mantou is a good finger food. For specific dietary concerns, ask your pediatrician.

Practical tips

  • Freeze extra mantou and steam it before serving — softer than refrigerating.
  • Multigrain mantou (corn, black rice) is coarser; start with plain white.
