How to serve, by age
6–8 mo
Peel and seed, steam until soft, then mash; or cut thick strips and steam soft for your baby to hold.
9–11 mo
Steamed-soft small pieces.
12 mo+
Soft pieces, pumpkin congee, or soft pumpkin pancakes all work.
Choking risk: Low
Thoroughly steamed pumpkin is low risk. Remove the rind and any fibrous strands completely before it goes on the tray.
If choking ever happens: act immediately — call emergency services (911 in the US) and seek emergency care. Do not wait.
Allergens
Pumpkin is not among the eight most common food allergens (milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish). Any food can cause a reaction in principle — introduce new foods one at a time, during the day, and watch your baby.
Common questions
- My baby's palms and soles turned yellow — is something wrong?
- Eating a lot of pumpkin can stain palms and soles with carotenoids; it fades once you cut back. If it worries you, ask your pediatrician.
Practical tips
- Small kabocha-style pumpkins steam up dense and sweet without going watery.
- Stir pumpkin purée into rice cereal or congee.
