How to serve, by age

8–10 mo

Soak and cook until a pinch crumbles them, then skin and mash; a little olive oil blended in is the classic hummus.

1 yr+

Beans squashed flat with a fork, and soft bean patties.

Choking risk: High

In dried-bean form they are round, hard and wrapped in skin — squash flat and peel before any serving.

If choking ever happens: act immediately — call emergency services (911 in the US) and seek emergency care. Do not wait.

Allergens

Chickpeas is not among the eight most common food allergens (milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish). Any food can cause a reaction in principle — introduce new foods one at a time, during the day, and watch your baby.

Common questions

Can I use canned chickpeas straight from the can?
Rinsed and drained, yes — but watch the sodium. Choose no-salt-added cans, or cook dried chickpeas yourself.

Practical tips

  • A few drops of lemon juice freshen the mash — once lemon is already introduced.
  • Chickpea purée is mealier and blends smoother than adzuki paste.
